Indiana
Rev up your engines and prepare yourself for one exciting ride. Indiana is the place to enjoy museums, celebrations and parks. The Crossroads of America is made up of Indianapolis (its capital and major city) and smaller towns and cities that make up much of the state’s charm. Aside from history and culture, Indiana is also all about golden fields, verdant valleys, farmlands and cornfields.
First stop is Indianapolis City, which is now a flourishing tourist site, with a host of sporting events and attractions that draw visitors from the country and the whole world. There is, of course, the Indianapolis 500 (or Indy 500), which is the state’s top draw in terms of tourism. This international event is held annually on Memorial Day Weekend. The world’s best drivers come to Indiana to compete in the race. Other motorsport events are the US Grand Prix Formula One Race (in September) and the Brickyard 400 race (in August).
Other destinations with historical and cultural interest include:
- Vincennes: Indiana’s oldest city and is replete with architectural treasures. This is the site of the former capitol before Indiana was pronounced as a state.
- Angel Mounds (Vanderburgh Country): This is among North America’s best preserved Native American sites. It is a National Historical Landmark.
- Indiana State Museum, which features four floors on the history and culture of the state from pre-historic times up to the present
- Lincoln Museum (Fort Wayne), features aspects of the life of Abraham Lincoln
- Mansfield Roller Mill has much of its original 1870s parts in use.
- Bloomington is a place to visit in August, as it celebrates its Street Festival of Arts and Crafts.
- Levi Coffin is included as an Underground Railroad Stop helping slaves escape in the 1800s
- Indianapolis Zoo, with its extensive collection of whales and dolphins
- Wolf Park lets you get close to wolves that roam freely in the estate
- South Bend Chocolate Company: try some of the best homemade chocolates and have a look at its collection of chocolate molds.
- Amish Acres (Nappanee), which takes you back to life in an Amish community during the 19th century.
- Studebaker National Museum (South Bend) is for car enthusiasts as it features an array of automobiles, carriages, wagons and military vehicles.
Enjoy the great outdoors as Indiana is rich in nature’s bounty. Indiana is home to 24 State Parks, a multitude of lakes and 9 man-made reservoirs. These include the Hoosier National Forest (Bedford), Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (Michigan City), George Rogers Clark National Historical Park (Vincennes) and Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial (Lincoln City).
